What’s the story behind Balanced Birth Doula?
My name is Heather Hill. I live in Strathcona County and enjoy a combination of acreage and city life. I have an amazing and supportive family with a husband and three big kids!
Prior to my life as a doula, I worked as a social worker for Children’s Services. My role then was to support families through crisis and often very sad moments in their lives; this role pushed me to be solution focused and to find creative solutions for individuals as they moved through major life changes. Unknown to me then, it was all training for my future role in birth work!
After 2004, I transitioned from professional life as a social worker, to mother, and birth worker. After having my third child in 2010, supporting my sister as a coach for the birth of her child, and my best friend for her planned VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean), I finally made the leap to birth work as my primary profession. In 2011, I completed my DONA Birth Doula training and became fully certified birth doula. I have not looked back since. My skill set has continued to grow and evolve. Beginning as a hobby photographer, I began building my photography skills so that I could document birth stories for my doula families. I have become a Certified Holistic Doula with Matrona Institute, a Lamaze trained Childbirth Educator, CAPPA trained Lactation Educator, Spinning Babies Aware, and a Hypnobabies HypnoDoula. I hold certification as a 500 Hour Hatha Yoga and 85 Hour Pre and Postnatal Yoga Teacher. I am a member with the Doula Association of Edmonton, and sit on the board of the Doula Association of Alberta
I see my role as a doula to be a personal guide on your birth journey. Prenatally, we spend time discussing the physical and emotional aspects of birth to inform decision making, so that you can make empowered and informed decisions that are best for you and your baby.
I will work collaboratively and professionally with your medical care givers, and your support people. Whether it is holding space, verbal affirmations, applying comfort measures, guiding birth partners, advocating, informing or providing a calming presence, I am there to fill in any gaps so you have a complete, fulfilling and positive birth experience.

Testimonials
What Heather’s Clients have to say…
“During active labour, Heather provided endless coping suggestions and encouragement for both of us. We walked, climbed stairs, and used the Birthing Ball, massage, pressure points, breathing techniques and various positions. Heather’s calming and knowledgeable presence was greatly appreciated. She respected the nurses and worked with them”
Michelle
“We forged a trusting relationship with Heather during the prenatal period that translated into a relaxed and focused birth experience. The birth process itself was incredible and Heather was a welcome participant in one of the most empowering experiences of my life. She was wonderful throughout and bore witness to a very personal event”
Jocelyn and Jeremy
“The level of attention and care given to us by our Doula was excellent. I wasn’t treated as ‘just another client’, I truly felt cared for”
Danielle & Doug
“I was so moved by the birth story you prepared for us. Labour is all-consuming, and it was so wonderful to have you there to witness it and record it (through photos and the story), because it’s amazing how much you forget. Now we have a record of what happened, and I hope to share it with our daughter in the years to come. I know I would have really valued having such a detailed story of my own birth from my mom.”
Lisa
“Above all, thank you Heather for being such a special part of our birth. We really appreciated your support and encouragement. The birth story you wrote for us is wonderful and I’m sure [she] will love to read it someday. Thank you so much!”
Lindsay
“I was thinking of …how amazing an experience you helped me create, I honestly don’t think I would have survived without you! I am so glad I got to have you there for me and if I had to do it all over again I would do the exact same! Thanks for keeping me focused and relaxed! And for staying calm and serene :)”
Michelle
“You really helped ease our worries in preparation for the birth… [we] were so grateful for all of the time you spent with us. Future pregnant women will be so lucky to work with you.”
Robyn
“My overwhelming memory of delivery was that every time I reached out my hands for help you and {my husband} were there grabbing them. I felt so supported…”
Kara
“Heather was wonderful to deal with. We weren’t sure if we needed a doula but we are so glad we decided to go that route. Having the intimate one, on one appointments to discuss the birthing process and what to expect was a huge help. Heather was our constant as you don’t always get your designated OB. It was comforting knowing that we could reach out for guidance at anytime. We highly recommend Heather’s services and know you will appreciate her knowledge and love the photos and birth journal as keep sakes.”
Danielle
“Heather is so incredible! We could not have asked for a more supportive, encouraging, knowledgeable, and experienced doula to be with us during the births of our two children. She put all of our worries at ease with her calming nature. When I felt discouraged she reminded me that everything would be alright and to just relax. When I wanted to give up, Heather was there to provide strength and reassurance. Just her presence alone was a comfort to my husband and I. We are so thankful for Heather and highly recommend her to everyone!”
Haylie
“With Heather’s help and guidance we avoided a c-section. Would recommend, especially for first time parents.”
